The Benefits of an Insulation Upgrade

Instant Benefits.

The Victorian Government agency, Sustainability Victoria, recently conducted an in-depth analysis of the benefits of upgrading insulation in existing homes as part of their Energy Smart Housing Guide.

Below, we summarise some key findings. It’s important to recognise that insulation is a crucial element in improving a home’s energy efficiency. However, for optimal results, it should be combined with proper ventilation, airtightness, efficient heating and cooling systems, high-performance windows, and thoughtful overall house design.

1. Good Insulation improves the everyday comfort by reducing the extreme temperatures (hot & cold)

2. A well insulated home can save you upto 45% on annual heating & cooling costs.

3. A well insulated home provides more stable temperatures (warm in winter and cool in summer) means occupants are not exposed to the extremes of heat and cold.

4. Incorrectly installed insulation can “significantly decrease” thermal performance, leading to higher heating and cooling bills.

5. Leaving as little as 5% of the ceiling or wall area uninsulated can reduce the effective insulation value (R value) by almost half.

6. By maintaining more constant temperatures  reduces the likelihood of damp or mold, the house promotes a healthier environment.

7. Insulation pays itself off over an average of 5-7 years by its returned cost savings.
